Nightmare CycleThe Nightmare Cycle is a state of magical flux only found in Ruins. There are four distinct stages of the cycle. In total there will be 40 time segments for the cycle, with each segment lasting 15 seconds, which in total, there would be 600 seconds in all 40 time segments.
Calm (lasts 19-23 time segments)During the calm stage, there is no ambient sound and illuminated areas have bluish tint. In this state, Nightmare Lights stay closed.
Warning (lasts 4-6 time segments)During the warning stage, visible areas turn into a gray tone instead of blue and a quiet ambient sound starts to play. Ancient Statues begin to glow and Nightmare Lights open up slightly, illuminating a small area around them.
Nightmare (lasts 10-14 time segments)During the nightmare, the illuminated Runic Turf starts to glow red, the rest of the map will become vibrantly colored, and ambient noise is louder. In this state, the statues distort into expressions of horror, and Nightmare Fuel begins seeping from their eyes and mouths. If mined in this stage, there is a chance for Shadow Creature to spawn from them. The Nightmare Lights will be completely open and glow stronger, illuminating more area. While the Nightmare Lights are fully open, they also spawn hostile Hallucinations, regardless of the player's sanity level. Earthquakes also occur most frequently in this stage. Splumonkeys turn into hostile shadow creatures.
Dawn (lasts 1-3 time segments)
Dawn is very similar to the warning stage. Runic turf returns to normal. Ancient Statues are no longer distorted but still emit light. The difference between dawn and the warning stage is that the Nightmare Lights are still fully open and will still spawn Nightmares. In addition, splumonkeys are still in their shadow form.
Nightmare Cycle in CavesSometimes a fissure appears on the Caves floor, and some red light, similar to Nightmare Lights are seen, leaks through it. It spawns Shadow Creatures, similar to the Nightmare Lights. Those creatures attack the player even when the player is Sane. Fissures go away after some time passes at the caves level. (player must be in the caves level)
