Caves are large underground sections of the world filled with unique features. They are so large that they are generated as whole new maps upon entering. Caves have their own artwork, terrain, and maps. Various creatures, plants, and other objects reside within.
“ A relic of an ancient civilization long dead the ravages of time. ”
–Wickerbottom
The Ruins are the last remnants of a forgotten civilization located on a level below Caves. They are generated as a new world upon entering them, just like caves. Ruins have their own theme, terrain, and biomes. Various unique creatures, plants, and other objects reside within.

The Nightmare Cycle is a state of magical flux only found in Ruins. There are four distinct stages of the cycle. In total there will be 40 time segments for the cycle, with each segment lasting 15 seconds, which in total, there would be 600 seconds in all 40 time segments.
Health is a measurement of overall physical well-being. Wilson, Willow, Wendy, Wickerbottom, and Woodie have 150 Health; Wes has 113 Health; and Maxwell has 75 Health. Wolfgang has 200 health by default (his health limit rises to 300 with a full belly and drops to 150 when starving). WX-78 begins with 100 Health and is capable of increasing its health cap up to 400 by eating Gears. From Reign of Giants, Wigfrid has 200 Health, and Webber has 175 Health.
Unlike Hunger (and in many situations Sanity), Health does not drain over time. Health is lost when a character takes damage while attacked, burning, starving, or freezing. Some foods like Monster Meat can also reduce Health. Losing all Health results in death (although not necessarily the loss of the game). Health can be seen on the heart-shaped gauge in the upper-right corner of the screen, which shrivels as the character's Health is depleted.

“ I'm so hungry! ”

Hunger is one of the primary game concepts as it is the measurement which determines whether or not the character is starving (which is, of course, the game's very namesake). A full stomach for most characters is measured at 150, except for Wolfgang's which is 300, WX-78's which is initially 100 and can be upgraded to 200, and Wes' which is 113. Hunger drains at 9.375 per minute (11.71875 as Wes, 14.0625 when normal and 28.125 when mighty as Wolfgang) or 75 points per one game day (93.75 as Wes, 112.5 when normal and 225 when mighty as Wolfgang). Hunger drain can also be slowed to 60% normal loss rate by equipping a Belt of Hunger, and slowed to 75% normal loss rate by the Hibearnation Vest.
When Hunger meter reaches zero, Health will begin to drain at 1.25 points per second (37.5 per one game hour) until something is eaten or the character dies. Eating most food will increase the Hunger meter. The amount restored depends on the food eaten and cooked food typically restores more than raw food. Some food also has the potential to decrease hunger, sanity, or health. Also, when going to sleep in a Straw Roll, Fur Roll or a Tent, the character takes an immediate hunger penalty; if Hunger was reduced to 0 by that, the character will lose health in their sleep.
